Learn More About Melanoma

Melanoma  is the most serious type of skin cancer and is the 5th most common cancer among both men and women. Melanoma occurs when pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) mutate and become cancerous.  Melanoma accounts for only about 1% of all skin cancers, yet it is responsible for the majority of deaths from skin cancer.

Brain metastases are a specific form of Stage IV melanoma, and one of the most common and difficult-to-treat complications of melanoma. Brain metastases differ from all other metastases in terms of risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment.

Until recently, melanoma brain metastases carried a poor prognosis, with a median overall survival of about four to five months, but improvements in radiation and systemic therapies are offering promise for this challenging complication, and some patients are curable.
